The Chosen
Adapted by Aaron Posner and Chaim Potok
From the novel by Chaim Potok
Directed by LINDA PHENIX
featuring
Brad Goertz, Steve Garfinkel, Trevor B. Cone
Brian Chambers & John Forgy
A standing-room-only hit wherever it has played, this award winning adaptation is the story of two boys
(Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders), two fathers and two very different Jewish communities – “five blocks and a world apart” –
in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in the 1940’s. Set against the backdrop of WWII, the revelation of the Holocaust, and the
desperate struggle of Zionism. The Chosen remains not essentially political or religious but deeply human. Reuven Malter and
Danny Saunders are both passionate and intelligent young men. When Reuven is injured by Danny during a heated
baseball game between the rival yeshivas, a unique friendship is born. As the boys grow to manhood, they are forced
to learn important lessons about each other, their fathers and themselves.
This is a story of friendship, family and difficult choices that we must make on the path to understanding, respect and reconciliation.
A successful novel when it was released in 1967, The Chosen was also made into a successful film in 1981,
directed by Jeremy Kagan and starred Robbie Benson, Barry Miller, Rod Steiger and Maximilian Schell.
“Potok has collaborated with Aaron Posner, a director and writer of imagination and skill who brings theatricality
to the story without losing its intellectual content or sacrificing Potok’s stunning language.” The Chestnut Hill Philadelphia
In January 2015 TLH staged the sold-out, critically acclaimed production of My Name is Asher Lev,
also adapted by Aaron Posner and based on the novel by Chaim Potok.
